Storage Tips For Seasonal Decor

Unless you have some very weird fashion sense, season decor will spend most of the year packed away. The decorations we get out for Halloween, Christmas, or any other holiday are usually only appropriate for that time of year – and when we don’t use them, there’s a designated cupboard, closet, or box where they will stay.

Improper storage of holiday decorations can mean that they’re vulnerable to things that can shorten their lifespan. Bugs can hide in some holiday decorations, while others can be damaged from retaining moisture, dust, or mold. Decorations can even crack, crumble, or fall apart under the wrong conditions. That is why we have prepared a list of decoration storage tips to keep your seasonal decor safe.

Storage Tips For Seasonal Decor

Here are essential storage tips for season décor. These tips will help to keep your seasonal items in good condition throughout the year.

1. Check Decorations More Than Once A Year

Holiday decorations should be checked more than once per year. This way, you can ensure that they’re still in good condition – and if there are any issues with decorations like bugs or damage, you can see it ahead of time and replace or repair them.

2. Store Them In A Sealed Container

Your holiday items should be stored in a sealed, airtight, and watertight container. This is better than cardboard or wooden boxes, which might create a whole list of other problems that bugs or mold can easily access.

3. Avoid Bugs

Bugs love certain types of holiday decorations and the conditions in which we store items. Dark, quiet storage areas are a potential home for bugs – and of course, nobody wants to share the holiday season with any of these

Avoid bugs by making sure decorations are in proper storage solutions. When necessary, store decorations with incense – it’s one of those things that bugs just don’t like.

4. Storing Fragile Or Vintage Decorations

Everyone has decorations they consider sentimental or special. Sometimes, these might be fragile or vintage ones. Store these separately – and make sure that you store them with enough padding (like bubble wrap or tissue paper). If someone drops the box, how sure are you that it would be safe from damage? Enough packing around these items can prevent damage from taking place.

Don’t forget: Vintage decorations can be professionally restored.

5. Remove Damaged Decorations

If you see any damaged decorations or ones that might become damaged soon, remove them from the main collection. This stops them from picking up any further damage in storage – and when it comes to decorations made from metal or glass, it’s about safety.

There are several options for decorations that have damaged. Repair them, or replace them with new decorations. It’s a good excuse to start a new tradition!

6. What About Mold?

Mold is a common problem for items that are in storage for long periods of time.

A potential mold issue can be identified by appearance or smell. If you notice any gray, green, or blue powder-like substances collecting on items or it develops a musty or strong smell, it could be mold.

Mold thrives in darkness (and on left-over moisture), although hates vinegar – and cannot thrive in a dry environment. Remove items, wipe them down with a water-and-vinegar solution, and dry them properly. Then, store them in an airtight container away from the potential moisture source.

7. Kid And Pet Safe Storage

Have kids or pets in the house too?

It might mean that you have to take more care when it comes to how you store your holiday decorations. Some decorations can contain small or fragile items that may be a hazard for kids or pets.

Crates or containers with space for combination locks are available. Never assume that holiday or Christmas decorations will stay hidden just because kids or pets won’t find their hiding spot!
