Spring is just around the corner. After a long, cold winter, those longer, warmer days are certainly welcomed. For many, spring also sparks the desire to tidy things up. It’s the perfect time to purge everything that’s accumulated over the winter season; to open the windows, air things out, and breathe some fresh air into your home. Whether you’re a homeowner or an apartment dweller if you’re new to spring cleaning, here are some handy spring cleaning and self-storage tips to keep in mind that will simplify the process and ensure your success.
Spring Cleaning Self-Storage Checklist
Declutter
For starters, you’re going to want to declutter. A lot of stuff accumulates over the winter season when you’re trapped inside. Books pile up on end tables and coffee tables, paperwork gets piled up and shoved into corners, pillows and blankets are strewn about, and children’s toys are scattered throughout the house; you get the picture.
To start your spring cleaning and organizing project off right, take the time to declutter all that stuff. Put things back into their proper places, and while you’re at it, be on the lookout for things you don’t use regularly. These things can be put away in storage until the next time you need them.
Start at the Top
Once you’ve finished decluttering, you’re ready to start cleaning your home. Start at the top and work your way down; that way you can clean up all of the dirt, dust, and debris that falls to lower surfaces as you proceed.
Light fixtures and ceiling fans should be wiped down and dusted; the same with moldings, ceiling fans, light fixtures, and the tops of cabinets and shelves. Use the brush attachment on your vacuum to clean these areas or wipe them down with a microfiber cloth and cleaning supplies to catch as much debris as possible.
Dust
Take items off of shelves, tables, dressers, and any other surface, and dust them off with a clean cloth. You should also take the time to dust off the items that sit on those surfaces; decorative elements, lamps, books, etc., before you put them back in their place.
Windows and Screens
This is a big one that a lot of people forget, but cleaning the windows and screens is super important and makes a big difference. Use warm soapy water or a mixture of water and white vinegar to clean both the interior and exterior of your windows. Pop the window screens out also, and spray them down with a hose.
Clean the Floors
Once you’ve cleaned all of the upper surfaces, you can move to the floors. Vacuum the carpets and rugs; consider shampooing them, too. Sweep and mop hard-surfaced floors, such as hardwood and tile. However, make sure you exercise caution when mopping – especially hardwoods – to avoid potential damage.
Clean Appliances
Don’t forget the appliances, too! Over the winter, you probably baked a lot of confections and cooked a lot of roasts, but even if you didn’t, your oven could use a good cleaning. So could the rest of the appliances, for that matter, including the fridge, freezer, dishwasher, etc.
Rent a Storage Unit
Spring cleaning and self-storage fit together like two peas in a pod. A storage unit is a perfect way to safely stow away items that you don’t use on a regular basis; seasonal items, decorations, clothing, recreational equipment, furniture, etc. Renting a storage unit and using it wisely will help to maximize your indoor space and will make keeping things neat and clean a whole lot easier.
